Haiti, like Easter Island, is often used as a powerful ‘cautionary
tale’ to warn the public about environmental degradation, but the
environmental history of Haiti still needs to be written. This talk
will examine the environmental factors that shaped the history of the
western part of the island of Hispaniola, as well as the way in which
humans transformed the island’s landscape since 1492, looking in
particular at issues such as deforestation and soil erosion.
